Autopsy fails to show why cheerleader died

An autopsy failed to determine what killed an Atlanta Falcons cheerleader from Roswell who was found dead over the weekend, the Fulton County medical examiner's office said Monday.

The GBI now will do toxicological tests on the body of 22-year-old Tara Tanner, which could take weeks to complete.

Tanner's body was found in her Atlanta apartment Sunday by a friend.

"There was no apparent foul play," said Atlanta police Sgt. John Quigley. "It doesn't appear to us that an investigation will be warranted."

Tanner graduated from Roswell High School in 2000 and attended Georgia State University. She was a four-year veteran of the Falcons cheerleading squad.

"She was beautiful on the inside and outside, really sweet," said Erin Smith of Roswell, who teamed with Tanner on both the football cheerleading team and on the competition squad at Roswell High. "She loved it. It was her life. It meant more to her than going off to college." Tanner was even better as a dancer.

"She was an excellent cheerleader, but dance was her real talent," said Julie Davis, a rising senior at the University of Alabama who was a cheerleader with Tanner at Roswell High.

On the Falcons Web site, Tanner said her favorite memory was entertaining U.S. troops overseas, and that she planned to pursue a career in entertainment, with a focus on acting.

The funeral will be Wednesday in Houston, Texas. (By Paul Kaplan, The Atlanta Journal-Consitution)
